The early exploration writing of Philip Sava bent the limits of post-modern fiction, revealing fantastical worlds that fooled many into believing they were, in fact, real. Sava’s kaleidoscopic collections, of which Memoirs of a Trespasser is the undeniable centerpiece, drew upon true experiences from his exotic travels but were infused with a hallucinatory inventiveness that set his work apart from others in the genre. Though Sava had associates all over the world, he spent most of his time living in solitude on a ranch in southern Madagascar. When interrogated by the press on his cloistered lifestyle, he notoriously answered, “Who needs love when you have cognac?”

WHEN TO WEAR: A true adventure scent, wear Memoirs of a Trespasser when travelling and again when you’re back home to conjure comforting memories.

NOTES: Madagascar vanilla, guaiacwood, myrrh, benzoin resin, ambrette seeds, oak barrels

I love the smoky opening, but it doesn't last long enough. You're left with a vanillic woody scent. Beautiful and slightly rough.

Possibly my favourite Imaginary Authors release so far. MOaT opens with a dry, hot blast of wood, smoke and vanilla. This is not a soft, cuddly vanilla - this is vanilla in the wild. Rough, burnt, woody and smokey as hell. MOaT manages to be both unique and accessible, without ever compromising what it's all about. Raw, rough, woody vanilla. From start to finish the vanilla hums away under everything. Warm and dry, not too sweet, not nearly as gourmand as most. Above the vanilla plays out an absolutely beautiful symphony of black, burnt woods, heavy smoke and a touch of earthy resin. Possibly the most unisex take on vanilla I've ever encountered, and certainly one of the best 'dark wood' frags I've ever smelled. As a side note, towards the end of the drydown I perceive an unmistakable smell of roasting marshmallows over a campfire. Woodsmoke, vanilla and a touch of something slightly wild. A joy to wear. Sillage is firmly in the 'heavy' category, in hot weather this can get a little overwhelming, but the woodsmoke chord prevents it from entering cloying, sickly territory. Longevity, as with most I.A. offerings is truly stellar. I cannot recommend MOaT enough. Truly one of the best niche frags out there, both in quality and value for money - Even if the marketing is a touch wanky.

  • Vanilla ...at its best

If you love the smell of vanilla but don't want to smell like a baked good ..this is the one to try. I would describe it as the best way to smell vanilla, ...just enough to soften the smokey deep smell that envelopes the depth of the vanilla without the sugary afterthought. Vanilla , slightly dangerous, interesting, and just enough to be beautiful without smelling like a cupcake.
